At d.school Paris, we approach innovation
through three design methodologies:
Design Thinking
Design Thinking is based on reframing the problem and leveraging a deep understanding of users—their practices, needs, tensions, and behaviors.
Project management relies on collective intelligence and insights gained from field research, interviews, and observations, as well as on systematic prototyping and testing of the ideas and concepts generated.
Progressive iteration makes it possible to arrive at a solution that is desirable, feasible, and successfully implementable in the market and for target users.
This approach fosters breakthrough innovation and increases the chances of success for transformation projects through incremental developments, validated at each milestone by field testing and the involvement of key stakeholders (users, team members, and experts).
Sustainable Design
Sustainable Design builds on Design Thinking by adding a strong systemic dimension, integrating a broader spectrum of stakeholders.
Beyond users and internal project actors, this approach takes into account social systems (norms, habits, cultures, organizations, etc.) as well as natural systems (ecosystems, resources, environmental impacts, etc.).
It enables a more accurate assessment of the impacts of solutions on these systems and a deeper consideration of design constraints related to resource use, as well as the direct and indirect negative externalities generated by the solutions developed.
Design Fiction
Design Fiction is a creative foresight approach that adds a strategic dimension to design by anticipating future scenarios based on weak signals detectable in the present.
Prototyping artifacts that represent possible futures makes it possible to assess their desirability and to develop a strategic roadmap to guide organizations in their decisions and adaptation to these emerging futures.
This approach helps organizations better understand the risks surrounding their activities, anticipate unintended consequences, and prepare for potential crises by developing a proactive capacity for adaptation.

Co-design a solution with our students from École des Ponts et Chaussées and the ME310 Master’s program
Collaborate with our students on an innovation project for 9 months. Using a hands-on, iterative approach, they develop prototypes, test concepts, and deliver an operational solution along with the insights they’ve gained.
